Screening
At Big Brothers and Big Sisters our screening process is very thorough and extensive. We do everything possible to make sure the Parent/Guardian of the children we serve will be comfortable with the Big Brother or Big Sister we have selected.

We look for individuals who have a genuine interest in children and helping them reach their full potential through a healthy, nurturing and fun relationship.

When a person inquires about becoming a Big Brother/Sister they are provided with an information package. In this package they will find information about our programs along with a request for the following references: Employer, Doctor, Partner (if applicable), Family and 3 Character References. Once they have completed the information and return it to our office they will be contacted for a "First Interview". This will take place at our office. References will be sent out at this time. Applicants will also be required to go to the Police Station to obtain a criminal reference check including vulnerable sector screening. In order to obtain the police check they will be given a form from the agency during their first interview. The applicant will be reimbursed for this when they present a receipt.

Once we have received the applicant's references they will be contacted for a "Second Interview" by one of our caseworkers. This is a fairly in-depth interview and is conducted in the applicant's home where we discuss life experiences during their schooling, in their family, with their friends, their goals, values and their motivation to become a volunteer with us.

Bare in mind that the Parents/Guardians of the children we serve must allow their child to become friends with a "stranger", which is initially what our volunteers are to the family. We understand and appreciate this, which is why our screening process needs to be thorough and extensive.
