It's that simple: Providing children with their very own special friend. Someone who becomes interested and involved in a child's life. Someone who the child can telephone after school to tell them how well they did on their math test or that they got the winning goal in their floor hockey game. Someone to help the child realize their full potential, increase self-esteem, and boost self-confidence. "Bigs" are positive adult role models, who are 19 years of age or older, working or going to school, and are interested in being a friend to a child by sharing a variety of interests and hobbies. A "Big" should be trustworthy, friendly, tolerant, punctual...but most importantly themselves! "Littles" range in age from 5 -
16 years old, are from single parent families and have been identified as
someone who could benefit from the one to one attention of a positive adult
role model.
Along with our traditional program, Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Peterborough has developed programs such as
Occasional Big Brother and Big Sister, and In-School Mentoring in order
to meet the needs of a wide variety of volunteers. We are willing to modify
your commitment to meet your work or personal time constraints. The key
to involvement with a child is consistency and this can be accomplished
within a flexible time schedule.
